Haiti’s Security Situation May Improve, Says Secretary of State for Public Security

In a recent statement, Mario Andresol, Haiti’s Secretary of State for Public Security, expressed optimism about the country’s security situation, citing a new police strategy aimed at harmonizing efforts, implementing a clear plan, and utilizing resources more efficiently.

Andresol’s optimism comes despite the country’s escalating violence and humanitarian crisis. According to Human Rights Watch, Haiti’s crisis has reached catastrophic levels, with allied criminal groups intensifying large-scale, coordinated attacks on the population and key state infrastructure.

The new police strategy, which Andresol believes will be instrumental in improving the security situation, is part of a broader effort to restore order and stability in Haiti. The country has been plagued by violence and instability, with gangs controlling around 85% of Port-au-Prince and its metropolitan area.

Andresol is convinced that holding elections in 2025 is possible, if security improves. He has pledged to play a crucial role in restoring order and has stated that he is prepared to step down from his post if that does not happen.

The international community has been urged to support a comprehensive, rights-based response to Haiti’s crisis, focused on restoring security, upholding the rule of law, and guiding the country back to democracy.
